Nadia Sawalha Upset After Revealing Her Perimenopause Hair Loss

Nadia Swalha, TV’s Loose Women celebrity has posted a Facebook video revealing her struggles with perimenopause hair loss.  52 year old Nadia stood in the bathroom after a shower intending to talk about a hair product but got upset as she began to confess how difficult it is to deal with her hair loss after years of having beautiful, larger than life curly hair.

So What Is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is caused by normal hormone fluctuations that happens before getting close to menopause.  As ovaries begin to make less estrogen, the symptoms of perimenopause are broad and manifest themselves differently from woman to woman.  Common symptoms include:

  • irregular and sometimes heavy bleeding
  • sleeplessness
  • night sweats
  • hot flushes
  • PMS
  • headaches
  • weight gain
  • vaginal dryness
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • irritability
  • mood swings
  • hair loss

Due to the vast array of symptoms, perimenopause can be difficult to diagnose.  Perimenopause can last for 10-13 years before getting to complete menopause and it is therefore normal for woman to experience some of these symptoms from their 40’s onwards. The average length that perimenopause is experienced is around four years and ends once there has been no menstruation for twelve months.

Perimenopause & Hair Loss

Hair loss during perimenopause does not normally result in complete hair loss, many women experience a level of hair thinning.  Physical causes are due to hormonal imbalance, DHT is a form of testosterone that commonly ends up being out of balance which causes the hair loss.  Some women are at a genetic predisposition during perimenopause also.
