First Dates – The Moment When Eve Betts Removed Her Wig

First Dates TV show participant Eve Betts left her date speechless after removing her wig and revealing her alopecia.  The beauty therapist met her date Jordan and explained that she had been suffering from alopecia from the young age of three. Her date Jordon mentioned that he used to have a top knot which then spurred Eve on to bravely remove her wig.

After a shocked silence Jordan looks at her without her wig and said ‘It suits you’ followed by ‘Keep it off!’. She confesses to being bullied at school and how hard she finds it.  Her dad works hard to buy her wigs and even drew on her first set of eyebrows.

Here is the moment it all unfolded:

What Is Alopecia?

147 million people suffer with alopecia worldwide and it can affect people of any age and of any race.

Alopecia is a generic name for most types of hair lost that affects men and women.  Alopecia has different types and some types are more aggressive than others.  Androgenic alopecia is the most common type and is often inherited from parents.  It commonly involves a receding hair line and thinning of hair on the top of the scalp for men, and a thinning all over for women.

Alopecia areata is most commonly known as ‘spot baldness’ and is more extreme.  It effects the scalp in patches and is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks it’s own cells.  This can affect the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or even the entire body (alopecia universalis).  Those who are suffering from this can re-grow their hair normally within a few years.

Cicatricial alopecia is the most severe form of alopecia. It is known as scarring alopecia due to scars it leaves on the affected areas of the head. The hair follicle is completely destroyed by the condition and therefore can’t grow back.
