Itchy Scalp & Hair Loss

Having both an itchy scalp and hair loss can be upsetting and embarrassing. The good news is that often this will fix itself over time. We have listed the most common reasons for this occurring:

Tying Hair Too Tightly

If you have a weave this could be pulling too tightly on the root of your hairs. Weaves can make your head itch because of the tension and make the hair fall out down to the constant pulling and itching.

Dandruff

Dandruff is when your scalp begins to flake due to scalp irritation. The skin can be red and greasy which makes scales on your scalp. Whilst dandruff doesn’t cause hair loss the constant itching might well be.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is usually on the body however it can sometimes be found on the scalp. It causes dead skin cells to form scales and they can be quite thick and dry. The treatment does involve removing the scales however excessive removal can make your hair fall out due to the pulling. We recommend using a brush and comb to help remove them and use an over the counter product such as Neutrogena T-Gel to help soothe.

Folliculitis

This is when the hair follicle becomes infected. This can cause spots on the scalp that feel irritated. If they are scratched they can leak. Hair loss will only occur if there has been excessive scratching and the infection is severe and has damaged the hair follicle.

Dermatitis

This irritation is usually due to sensitivity to hair products such as shampoo. If you itch excessively then this may cause hair loss.

Ringworm

This is a skin condition that only causes temporary hair loss.

Lupus

This inflammatory disease causes the body’s immune system to attack itself. Common symptoms are an itchy scalp and also joint pain, fever, skin lesions, fatigue and a rash on the face.

Medication

Some medications may alter the body’s ability to keep up with hair function. Seek advice for a doctor if this is the case for you.

Other Things To Consider

Some people may struggle with chlorinated pool water and also hard water. If you live in a hard water area consider using a water filter which fits over your taps/shower head.

Are You Requiring Hair Replacement?

We offer a non-surgical hair replacement therapy called the Perma-a-graph. We take a sample of your hair to make new hair and apply the new hair to a skin membrane that is then bonded to your scalp.
